Working with deaf parents to produce accessible information

DPPI Deaf Parenting Information

Disability, Pregnancy and Parenthood International (DPPI) convened a UK Working Party to look at information for deaf parents, made up of deaf parents, advocates for deaf people, deaf organisations and parenting organisations.

The group found that:

• There was a severe lack of fully accessible materials for deaf parents and parents-to-be.
• Mainstream services were not fully addressing the needs of deaf parents
• Deaf organisations were not fully addressing the needs of deaf parents
• There was a general lack of deaf awareness amongst health and social care professionals
• Signed videos were the preferred format by most deaf people and there was also an identified need for Plain English leaflets

With the support of a grant from The Big Lottery we:

• have produced an educational DVD for deaf parents about pregnancy and birth;
• have produced a number of plain English information sheets for deaf parents
• are developing our existing information sheets for professionals working with deaf parents
• are supporting the development of the Deaf Parenting UK website to enable it to become a centre of information for deaf parents.

We also provide an individual enquiry service for both professionals and for deaf parents or parents with a disability in the UK.
