DPPI has launched a new DVD, A Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth for Deaf Parents.
This innovative DVD for deaf parents and parents-to-be is presented in British Sign Language with sub-titles and voice-over, and with supplementary leaflets.
Launched at King’s College London School of Medicine on 7 March 2006, the event was attended by Deaf parents – some with their babies - health and education professionals and representatives from deaf organisations came to the event.
Bernadette O'Neill, Lecturer in Clinical Communication Skills at the King's College Medical School, saw the DVD as an extremely valuable resource for deaf parents to be and health care professionals alike. She also described initiatives in the medical school to raise the profile of sensory awareness in medical education and help students to get it right from the start.
After giving a vivid picture of difficulties that deaf parents may encounter in relation to their maternity care, Susan Daniels, Chair of the UK Council on Deafness, and herself a deaf parent, commended the DVD, saying,
"It is absolutely fantastic. I wish it had been available when I was expecting my children." Susan, also Chief Executive of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), commented that NDCS is planning to focus on parenting skills education in conjunction with other organisations which work with young people, like Brook.
The British Sign Language presenter on the DVD film, Trudi Collier, deaf mother of two, said, “Many deaf people prefer information in BSL and like visual access through sign language. ……you can watch it (the DVD) again and again the information is always available.”
Charlotte Moulton Thomas, a deaf parent, commented, "Sometimes you see other people getting information spoken to them by staff and now you will be able to access it on the DVD". Charlotte was keen to see more DVD initiatives to allow topics to be covered more fully.
Ramon Woolfe, producer of the DVD, explained the various ways that it can be used - playing all scenes straight through or selecting a scene from the menu (of six sections with 47 different scenes). A taster selection of clips from the actual DVD film was then shown - and well received! For further information contact Shanta Everington at DPPI
