DPPI Journal 64: Winter 2008/2009
From the editor
In this issue, three disabled parents share their personal accounts of aspects of parenthood. Not only did they experience the physical and emotional challenges of disability and parenting, but also faced the assumptions, myths and prejudice of others.
One mother writes about the complex, emotive subject of prenatal screening. Another describes how, as a result of her experiences, she is raising awareness and trying to dispel some of the myths about scoliosis and pregnancy. A third mother talks frankly about the communication barriers and prejudice she encountered during pregnancy.
In our lead article we look at the campaign for normal birth launched in the UK by the Royal College of Midwives and ask how disabled women will be included. Hopefully, it will be a positive step to improving attitudes towards, and understanding of, the needs of all mothers-to-be, including those who are disabled.
