The personal experiences of the disabled mothers featured in this journal are very different from each other but each woman describes how she adapted to her situation and to the challenges of parenthood. Both have used their experience and expertise to inform and guide others.

The theme of learning from experience is continued in two of the resources reviewed; we also report on a new easy-read pregnancy handbook that provides accessible information to empower and support parents with learning disabilities.

Articles about the creation of the roles of specialist midwives ? in epilepsy and in mental health ? describe how they can use their expertise to raise awareness about good practice and improve quality of life for new mothers.

In an article about the first UK research into domestic abuse and disabled women, the author describes wide-ranging and urgent recommendations to improve services. The findings make disturbing reading, and merit wide attention and debate.
