Award winning accessible information on parenthood

October 2006

DPPI is getting the message across

DPPI has received an award for innovation in recognition of two new resources launched earlier this year.

National Information ForumDPPI was a winner of one of the National Information Forum's (NIF) Getting The Message Across awards, presented by renowned writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner, on 16th October 2006.

The winning resources were:

DVD: Guide to pregnancy and childbirth for deaf parentsA Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth for Deaf Parents.
A DVD for deaf parents and parents-to-be, presented in British Sign Language, with voice over and sub-titles accompanied by supplementary leaflets in plain English. Launched in March 2006, it was deaf-led and produced by a deaf production company, Remark!

Having a baby: guide for visually impaired parents and professionalsHaving a Baby: a guide for visually impaired parents and professionals. A set of three guides to pregnancy, childbirth and early baby care. These were launched in May 2006 and are available in a wide choice of formats: audio CD, Braille, DAISY CD, print, large print. They were researched and written by a visually impaired parent.

The adjudicating panel described that the resources as “well set out" and said the presentation was "excellent". "Smashing" commented one judge. They admired its coverage, felt it to be realistic about parenthood, commended its inclusion of new fathers and the useful guidance on further support. The guidance for visually impaired people gained much from having been written by a visually impaired mother."

The Getting the Message Across awards acknowledge excellence and imagination in the provision of information to disabled people and others severely disadvantaged by lack of appropriate information.

These resources were produced as part of a DPPI project to develop resources for deaf and visually impaired parents and parents-to-be, funded by the Big Lottery. Demand for both resources is already high and they are clearly meeting a need.
